National Dessert Day DIY Dog Treats

National Dessert Day DIY Dog Treats

October 14th might just be one of the sweetest holidays of the year literally! It’s National Dessert Day, and while we humans may be thinking of cookies, cakes, and pies, our pets deserve a little something special too. To celebrate, I’m sharing a few super simple, pet-friendly treat recipes that are not only easy to make, but will also have your furry friends begging for more.

Pumpkin Frozen Yogurt Bites
These chilly little snacks are perfect for an autumn treat and only take a few minutes to prep!
Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup nonfat plain yogurt

  • ½ cup canned pure pumpkin
Be sure to use 100% pure pumpkin—not pumpkin pie filling, which may contain harmful ingredients like xylitol.

  • ¼ cup water

Mix everything together until smooth, then pour the mixture into an ice cube tray. If you want to really get into the fall spirit, try using a pumpkin-shaped tray (you can find some fun ones on Amazon). Pop it into the freezer for 3–4 hours, and voila—pumpkin perfection.

Baked Pumpkin Dog Treats
These warm, soft treats are the canine version of a pumpkin cookie, and they smell amazing while baking.
You’ll need:

  • 1 cup canned pure pumpkin (Again—pure pumpkin only!)

  • 2 eggs

  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
Make sure it does not contain xylitol—check your labels!

  • 3 cups flour

Combine all ingredients into a dough, then roll into gumball-sized balls. Line them on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Want to make them last longer? Store in an airtight container in the freezer—they’ll stay fresh for up to 3 months! Fun fact: You might recognize this recipe—it’s the same one I used for our National Dog Biscuit Day video back in February 2020!

Frozen Apple Yogurt Bites
This one’s great for both dogs and cats and only requires two ingredients:

  • 2 apples, chopped (with seeds and core removed)

  • 1 cup nonfat Greek yogurt

  • A splash of water

Toss the apples and water into a blender and blend until smooth. Mix in the yogurt, then pour the mixture into an ice cube tray. Freeze for 3–4 hours, and you’ll have a refreshing treat ready to go.
