What are intestinal parasites, and how do I get rid of them in my dog?

Intestinal parasites are worms, such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, or other parasites like heartworms, giardia, and coccidia. Getting rid of them requires specific treatment, depending on what they have. For example, heartworm is treated with either monthly treatment or injections. Coccidia would require treatment like Albon, and giardia requires either Panacur, metronidazole, or both.

What are external parasites, and what can I do to prevent them?

External parasites include things like fleas, lice, mites, or ticks. Monthly preventatives like Bravecto or Credelio will help with fleas and ticks. Lice and mites can be controlled with topicals like Revolution.

How soon should I bring my dog to the veterinarian if I suspect they may have parasites?

As soon as possible.

How will a veterinarian diagnose parasites in my dog?

They can run a fecal test, or they can run a blood test to check my heartworm and ticks.

Is ringworm a parasite too?

No, it's a fungal infection.

Why is early detection and diagnosis of parasites so important?

It's important so the proper treatment can be administered before the severity gets worse.
