As many of you know, I am proud of my Mexican roots, and one of my favorite times of the year is Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. It is a vibrant celebration that reminds us to honor and remember our loved ones who have passed, not with sadness, but with love, color, and joy.
As a child, I remember helping my Mama Nicha (Grandma Nicha) set up her ofrenda, I cleaned up the table typically used to play dominos and threw them somewhere else (to my uncles dismay), light up the candles, place the sugar skulls we picked up at a local fair, and listen to my grandmother talk with such passion about her late husband, her own parents, and many others who have passed but will not be forgotten.
This year at Lombard Veterinary Hospital, we are celebrating in a very special way by remembering the pets who were once part of our lives. Whether it was your first dog who taught you responsibility, your cat who always knew when you needed comfort, or the guinea pig that made your kids laugh, their spirits remain with us.
Our Community Ofrenda
We have created a small ofrenda (altar) in our lobby, a colorful display filled with marigolds, candles, and photos to honor pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge.
If you would like, we invite you to submit a photo of your pet or write a short message or memory to add to our ofrenda. This is a space for everyone, a place to celebrate their lives and share the joy they brought us.
The Memory Book
We will also have a memory book where you can write your pet's name and share a favorite story. Over time, this book will grow, filled with memories from our LVH family, celebrating the bonds we have built with our furry and sometimes scaly or feathered friends.
Celebrate at Home
You can also celebrate Día de los Muertos with your pets at home!
- Create your own ofrenda: Include your pet's photo, their collar, or a favorite toy alongside flowers and candles
- Tell stories: Share funny or sweet memories of your pets with your family and friends.
- Listen to music: Traditional Mexican music, Vicente Fernandez is my go-to, or songs that remind you of them. It's all about connection and love.
Día de los Muertos is not about mourning isn't about mouring; it's about celebrating life and keeping memories alive. At Lombard Veterinary Hospital, we are honored to share that joy with you, your families, and the pets who will forever be a part of our hearts.
We hope you will join us in adding your memories to our ofrenda and helping us fill our memory book with love, laughter, and stories that never fade.
¡Feliz Día de los Muertos!
